My twin toddlers have always loved smoothies and when the smoothie bowl trend started we joined right in! I love smoothie bowls because they are so versatile; there are a ton of different toppings to add for varying textures and flavors and you can either use yogurt or another fruit mixture as a base. It’s also a really easy way to add in nutrient dense toppings, like chia seeds and blueberries. Plus, is there anything more aesthetically pleasing than a perfectly designed smoothie bowl?!
Building smoothie bowls only takes a few minutes and it’s a great way to get your toddler involved! Take out their favorite healthy toppings and place them in small bowls for easy access. Then let them choose and add what they want; my girls always love helping and learning in the kitchen.
This smoothie bowl is super easy to make, just start with a base of yogurt — I used the new Almond Breeze Fruit on the Bottom Almondmilk Yogurt. I chose blueberry, but it also comes in peach, black cherry and strawberry. I’ve tried many plant-based yogurts before, but this one tastes the best – and as a plus has no artificial flavors, is a good source of calcium and contains five live active cultures. This almondmilk yogurt has real fruit on the bottom which I love. I add some berries on top for an extra punch, but the Yogurt is fruity and delicious without it.
The best part is it’s super creamy and tastes like a treat so my toddlers love it. There are also a few other flavors of Almond Breeze Fruit on the Bottom Almondmilk Yogurt: Strawberry, Black Cherry and Peach. All of these yogurts are a good source of calcium and vitamin E.
Once you’ve got your almondmilk yogurt in a separate bowl (for added toppings space), plan out your topping order. I started with banana slices, sprinkled chia seeds halfway on the bananas and yogurt, added frozen blueberries next and ended with sprinkled cacao nibs.
Bananas are always a great option for smoothie bowls because they add sweetness and they are a good source of vitamin B6, potassium and fiber. Chia seeds are an easy addition as well because they are packed full of antioxidants and are a good source of protein, fiber and magnesium. I like adding chia seeds to most of my own smoothies and smoothie bowls because of their health benefits and mild flavor.
Blueberries are full of antioxidant power and are high in vitamin C and potassium. My toddlers love frozen blueberries so we always opt for them instead of fresh, but either way you’ll get their awesome health benefits. Lastly, cacao nibs are jam packed full of minerals and nutrients. They have antioxidants, iron, magnesium and are a good source of fiber, protein and healthy fats.
The first time I made this blueberry yogurt smoothie bowl for my toddlers they went wild for it! It was gone in about 5 minutes and then they were grabbing at another yogurt container for more, I’m telling you, it’s so good! The Almond Breeze Fruit on the Bottom Almondmilk Yogurt was definitely the best part for them.
Here are some more topping ideas: unsweetened coconut flakes, flax, chocolate chips, any other fresh or frozen fruit slices, nuts (pepitas, almond slices, etc.), granola, peanut butter or nut butter, cinnamon, honey and so much more! The variety of toppings is endless and you can be as creative as you want. Smoothie bowls are a great way to make snack time fun with your toddler and get some extra nutritious foods into their diet.
